The Crucible

In class we have started reading the Crucible. This story talks about the Salem Witch Trials. It is a true story. It is very sad to see how anyone could be accused without any evidence. People back then believed in anything. Now if we look at the Salem Witch Trials we see stupidity, because obviously there are no witches.

People dress up as witched on Halloween. If someone back then dressed up in a witch outfit for fun, they'd have hung them immediately. Now-a-days we have more sense and know that there are no such thing as witches. I mean I bet some people out there might still believe there are, but the majority knows that there isn't. Now we have the day called Halloween where we dress up as things and go around getting candy for it. I bet back then if anyone decided to do that, they would have been sent to court for it.

Its quite sad that many lives were lost due to people believing in something that wasnt there. Most of these people hadn't even done anything. They were just not liked by someone, and that person decided to accuse them to get revenge. If I lived in that decade of time, and didnt like someone all I really had to do was accuse them of being a witch and I would never have to see them again. It is very wrongful of people to do that.

What were the Salem Witch Trials?

The Salem Witch Trials occurred in 1692. People thought that witches were real, and did many tests to prove if the person accused was a Witch or not. One way, would be throwing the accused witch over a bridge and if she floats shes a witch, and is scheduled to be killed. If the accused witch sinks though, she was not a witch. Both ways lead to the accused witches dying so therefor if you were accused of being a witch during this time there was really no way of surviving.

During their trials, the people watching the trial would say that the witch has them under a spell. Of course this was not true but people during this time believed anything and therefor believed this. Anyone who stood up for the witched was considered to be one of them, and was also put to trial, and convicted. After being convicted you were sentenced and killed. Many saw their loved ones die all due to the fact that one person accused them of being a witch. Many lives were killed during this time period all due to the Salem Witch Trials.

The Putirans, and how they tie back to America today

The Puritans were a group of English speaking protestants that came around the 16th and 17th centuries. The puritans originally were a diverse group of people. After they arrived to the United States of America they changed all around. They were now different from the Puritans who stayed in England.  The Puritans originally went to New England for a new starts. The went in a group of family. They wanted the right to believe in what they believed in. They also wanted the diversity to go away. These following things did not change when they arrived in New England. A new colony was getting started called the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Puritans from all around England wanted this because clearly being in England wasn't all that great to them. They wanted another chance. When they arrived to the new world is when some changes were happening and they finally felt the need to be a little more civil then they were back in England.

In my opinion, I do not think that the Puritans deserve the reputation that they have in history. I feel as if they came to just enjoy their lives. They wanted to feel accepted and free and the people wouldn't allow that. Puritans were regular people, and so what if they did not agree with what the majority agreed on. That's why we have the freedom of speech now. Also, so what if they didn't believe in the major religion? Does that mean they are bad people? No it does not, it just means that they believe in something else. Should they be punished for this? No, because they should have had the freedom of religion. If the puritans had came and settled during this century they would have been more then accepted by society, and they would not have had the bad reputation that they had in the past.

What is the American Dream?

To some the American dream is nothing really but a saying because they do not tend to take the time to think about what this means to them. To others it is everything. It is traced back to their ancestors when they made their trip over to the United States. Also, when they started working in the United States and finally living comfortably in their own homes. Some people are even born into the American dream.

Those who are born into the American dream are the people whose families have been here, and are not first generation Americans. Their parents had helped them achieve the American dream. The thing about the American Dream is that its not something you achieve and cant progress at. There is always progression to be made. Say you have a job for example and your making a decent amount of money at it, each time you get a raise you are achieving the American dream.

There are those lucky batch of people who achieve fame which is part of the American dream purely on luck. Justin Beiber is a perfect example of this. No one knew who this kid was before his mother put his music on Youtube, and he became e-famous. Usher then took him in and now Justin Beiber is famous. To me that is just pure luck. The American dream like I said before can be achieved in a numerous of ways some are born into it and progress at it, and some have to work there way to it.
